Prof. Moncef Harrabi and others visited Tohoku Fukushi University on May 11. Tunisia is located in North Africa facing the Mediterranean Sea and is known as one of the world's leading olive production areas.
In addition to Prof. Harrabi, members of the visiting group were Prof. Hiroko Isoda, Director of Alliance for Research on Mediterranean and North Africa, University of Tsukuba, Mr. Sahbi Mahjoub, President of an olive company (Sadira group) in Tunisia and Dr. Etteib Selma of a Researcher of University of Tsukuba. From our university, Vice President Prof. Sakae Otake, Prof. Michio Niwano, and Associate Prof. Masato Yamaguchi participated in the reception of the visit group.
Vice President Otake said, “We would like to plant olives on Ajishima Island (we signed a regional vitalization partnership agreement in this April) and to revitalize the region somehow.” “We would like to promote regional co-creation activities by growing olive seedlings bigger and bigger in Miyagi," Prof. Niwano also said.
Prof. Harabi responded with a smile, "I would like to cooperate in raising olives in cold lands and having a lot of people interested in olives." President Sahbi Mahjoub also said, "I'm so happy if I can help you, and I want you to come and visit Tunisia's olive groves." Friendly discussions on mutual interests took place.
In the exchange of gifts, potted olive seedlings of 6 months old and bottled olive oil of Tunisia were donated to our university from Tunisia side, and we gave a goodwill by design of Serizawa Keisuke from our university.
After this, the group visited related facilities of our university such as the Serizawa Keisuke Art Craft Center and Kansei Fukushi Research Institute.
